Shaping the Future: Chemical Engineering & Public Policy
Thursday 24 April 2025
12 - 4.30pm
Chemical engineering offers ways of thinking and solving problems that are well matched to the type of complex challenges that occur regularly in public policy. Yet chemical engineers – and engineers more widely – are not as commonly thought of in connection with public policy as some other professions (such as lawyers or those working in communications). This session aims to provide an introduction to policymaking for chemical engineers and other STEM professionals, explore the contribution chemical engineering has to make to public policy, and how this contribution can be best unlocked.

The IChemE Education Special Interest Group (EdSIG) in collaboration with the organisers at the University of Sheffield are putting together a series of thematic sessions targeting Chemical Engineering Education. These sessions will offer the opportunity to EdSIG members, educators and all interested in the theme of Education to contribute and/or attend three bespoke presentation and panel sessions on the latest advancements in chemical engineering education and a tour of the chemical engineering pilot plant and lab teaching facilities at the University of Sheffield.
The main focus of the Education session will be around digitalisation including use of AI tools and relevant practices. The presentation sessions will include the following:
Presentation session based on Education theme abstract submissions
Presentation session around digitalisation and use of AI in chemical engineering education. A plenary talk will be delivered by Professor Mohammad Zandi followed by presentations from submitted abstracts on themes of digitalisation and AI.
Panel discussion focusing on the use of AI tools in education and research projects and digitalisation. Panellists will include academics, industrialists, and the student voice, who will briefly outline their perspectives . The audience will then have a chance to contribute during an open discussion forum afterwards.
The tour will include key practical teaching facilities housed mainly inside the Diamond Building, such as the teaching labs used in chemical engineering courses, the Pilot Plant, and the iForge makerspace also housed inside the Diamond.
